Scholarships and Financial Aid

Scholarships are competitive awards.

Scholarship winners are usually selected based on a combination of some or all of the following:  academic achievement, financial need, athletic ability, community contribution, leadership, special talents, or membership in a specific minority population.

Scholarships are grants and do not need to be repaid.

Civil Service Employees Insurance Company Scholarship Children of full-time, retired, or deceased public employees.  3.0+ GPA  Award based on essay that proposes ways to reduce accident rate among teenagers
CTA Santa Clara County Human Rights Scholarship Member of under-represented group (Hispanic/American Indian/Alaskan Native/Asian/Pacific Islander/African American/GBLT/Disabled Persons.  Personal statement and 3 letters of recommendation
Elks National Foundation Legacy Child/grandchild/step-/ward of living Elk who joined before 4/1/5.  Take SAT or ACT, exhibit core values of Elks National Foundation.
Gates Millennium Scholars African/American Indian/Alaska Native/Asian Pacific/Hispanic American.  3.3+ GPA unweighted.  Leadership, extracurricular activities.  Financial need.  Full Scholarship.
Guardian Scholars Foster Youth.  In addition to the Chafee Grant, some colleges provide extra support.
NCAA Scholarships and Grants Athlete.  If you plan to play a sport in college, you must register with the NCAA.  The NCAA awards more than $10 million in scholarships and grants annually to student-athletes and member institutions, in addition to the $2.7 billion allocated by schools to fund athletics scholarships.
Hispanic Scholarship Fund  
AB 540 enables under-documented students to qualify for lower, in-state tuition rates at UCs, CSUs, and California Community Colleges.  (Note, this is NOT a scholarship, but a fee reduction.)
Italian American Heritage Foundation Italian descent.  Financial need, extracurricular and community activities.
Italian Catholic Federation Catholic / Italian descent.  Financial need, leadership, extracurricular activities, scholastics
Jack & Jeanette Chu Scholarship Asian heritage (at least 50%).  Must be accepted to UC Haas School of Business or pursuing a teaching career; must be attending UC Berkeley in Fall 2008.  2.5 and 5K. Renewable
Japanese American Citizens League Scholarships Japanese ancestry.  Applicants must be active National JACL members at either an Individual or Student/Youth level.  Various scholarships have different requirements.
Kaiser Permanente Asian Association Scholarship Asian descent.  2.5+ GPA.  Students who have demonstrated that they have the potential to be Asian leaders of the future.
Lapiz Family Fund Farm worker or child of farm/migrant worker.  Plan on attending a UC, 3.0 GPA, financial need.
Maria Elena Yuchengo Memorial Journalism Scholarship Filipino heritage (at least 50%).  Majoring in Journalism at any Bay Area University in Fall 2008; must demonstrate merit & financial need; essay required.
Marine Corps Scholarship Foundation Parent is current or former US Marine or Navy Corps.  Max adjusted gross income of 77K or less.  2.0+ GPA.  Essay, Student Aid Report, copy of tax return required.
National League of American PEN Women Female.  Submit significant sample of work in the arts (fine art, writing, or music).  2.5+ GPA.
P.E.O. Chapter WJ Emile Goris Scholarship Female.  Live in San Martin, Morgan Hill, or Gilroy.  Academic achievement, financial need, strength of character, activity in community.
SAMMY – Scholar Athlete Milk Mustache of the Year Award Outstanding scholar athlete.  Selection based on:  academic performance (35%), athletic excellence (35%), leadership (15%), community service (10%), milk experience (5%)
Ray and Lucy Matsumoto Vocational / Business Scholarship Japanese ancestry.  Planning on business major (preference to a student planning on attending a trade or business school)
San Jose GI Forum Scholarship Hispanic decent.  Preference to students attending 4-year college.  Academic achievement, financial need, community contribution, and career goals are all considered.
San Jose Alumnae Chapter Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. African-American descent.  Selection based on academic achievement, financial need, and participation in school and/or community.
Sons of Italy Western Foundation Wholly or partly Italian ancestry.  Academics, leadership, financial need, personal goals. $500-$5K.

Vietnamese Physicial Assoc of Northern California Scholarship Vietnamese descent.  Financial need.  3.5+ GPA.  Extra-curricular activities and community involvement.  Essay required.  Copy of tax return.
Violet Richardson Award Females 14-17.  Significant accomplishment as volunteer—identifying & trying to solve a problem.
Young Cancer Survivors> Cancer survivor.  Financial need.  2.5+ GPA, community service, determination, educational goals

Coca-Cola Scholars Foundation Four Year Award.  Demonstrated leadership in school, Commitment to community, Academic achievement (GPA of at least 3.0), and Part-time employment.
CTA Santa Clara County Human Rights Scholarship Member of under-represented group planning on attending a 4-year college to pursue a teaching credential in Pre-K to 12 public education.
eQuality Scholarship Demonstrated volunteer activity promoting equality/understanding of the GLBT community.
FFA National Scholarship Program Many types of scholarships to fit the many types of FFA members; decisions are made based on:  grades; community service; FFA involvement; leadership skills; SAE.
Foothill-De Anza Chancellor’s Scholar Awards Planning to attend De Anza or Foothill College.  Top 20% of class.
Galileo Memorial Scholarship Students pursuing engineering/math/science (not medicine).  High GPA, high SAT, extra-curriculars
Gavilan College Educational Foundation (GCEF) 2.0+ GPA.  Will attend Gavilan College in the fall.  A personal statement is required.
Good Tidings Foundation Community Service Scholarship Bay Area scholarships given to students in need who have demonstrated a commitment to community service
Horatio Alger Scholarship       Must have critical financial need ($50,000 or less adjusted gross income); involvement in co-curricular and community activities; perseverance in overcoming adversity; 2.0+ GPA.
Planning to enroll in a CA college and pursuing a 4 year degree.  2.75+ GPA.  Financial need.
Live Oak Common Scholarship A single common application submits you for many local, merit- or needs-based scholarships
Lt. Jose A. Santiago Scholarship 3.5+ GPA  Public service major (Law enforcement, firefighter, educator, medical profession, …).  Must have participated in community service.  Interview required.
McKelvey Foundation Entrepreneurial Scholarship Senior must own own business for at least 1 year and have at least 1 paid employee. Planning to attend a 4 year college.  $40K
Metropcs Community Scholars 3.0+ GPA.  Exceptional involvement in volunteerism & community service.  Financial aid NOT considered
National Commission for Cooperative Education Scholarship 10 colleges:  C.W. Post Campus of Long Island, Drexel, Johnson & Wales, Kettering, Northeastern, Pace, Rochester Inst of Tech., U of Cincinnati, U of Toledo, Wentworth Inst of Tech. 185 x $6K. 3.5 GPA
National FFA Collegiate Scholarship Many types of scholarships to fit many types of FFA members.  Decisions are made on grades, community service, FFA involvement, leadership skills and SAE.
National Latino Peace Officers' Association 4 scholarships: Richard Reyes Memorial Scholarship Program – for SJSU.  Suenos Scholarship – students pursuing law enforcement, NLPOA/Corporate Scholarship, NLPOA Scholarship.
National Merit Scholarships Awards range from $500 to $10K, and more than 10,500 are awarded each year.  Taking the PSAT in the fall of your junior year enters you in the competition.

Ronald McDonald House Charities (RMHC) National Scholarship 4 categories:  Asian, African-American, Hispanic, or Scholar.  Apply for only 1 category. Demonstrated achievement, financial need, community involvement, limited access to educational/career opportunities
Saint Louise Regional Hospital Volunteer Scholarship Interest in nursing or other health-related field, financial need, good moral character.  3 letters of recommendation and an interview.  $500.
Sam Walton Community Scholarship Academic achievement, leadership, community service, financial need.  Not Wal-Mart employee or child or dependent of a person who works at Wal-Mart.
San Martin Lions Club Scholarship Reside in MHUSD boundaries, involved in community service
Silicon Valley Engineering Apply to SJSU with major in engineering, high GPA, class rank, honors, advanced coursework.  $20K.
South Valley Running Club X-Country or Track runner as junior & senior.  GPA 3.0+, extracurricular, citizenship, sportsmanship.  Requires 2 letters of recommendation and essay.  Financial need.  Will continue running in college.
SunTrust Off to College One winner is chosen every two weeks from October to May
Toyota Community Scholars One nominee per school.  Academics, leadership, community service within and outside of school.
