Civics Requirements for Seniors

SENIORS MUST EARN 25 OUTSIDE POINTS PER QUARTER (50 PER SEMESTER)

Objectives of Civics Points Requirements

  • To expose high school students to a variety of governmental agencies and increase students’ knowledge, understanding, and involvement in the political process of their communities.
  • To share the needs and involvement of the community service for the mutual benefit of this community.

Areas of opportunity for civics points:

Community Service: Maximum 25 points per semester; 3 points an hour

  • Find/contact the community organization you are interested in and submit it to your instructor for approval before services are volunteered.
  • Not all community service opportunities listed on this website may be approved:

–          The service must add a positive qualitative value to the community served. It must be a non-profit organization.

–          The service must be within the semester the student is enrolled in the Civics class.

–          Double credit will not be allowed in academic courses or other outside activities given to the student for the community service.

–          The service may not be affiliated with any religious organization.

–          The service may not be affiliated with any Live Oak High School organization.

  • After approval, participate as committed.(There is a maximum credit of 2 hours per visit.)
  • Obtain verification of hours from the agency for your instructor.
  • Provide a write-up to accompany each visit. (Your instructor will provide guidelines on the format for the visitation essay.)

City Council / School Board / Planning Commission Meetings – Maximum 5 meetings total; 5 points per meeting

  • Observe for at least one hour at each meeting, with the time of arrival and departure clearly marked on your report materials.
  • When you leave, obtain a visit verification signature from a member of the Council or Board being observed
  • Provide a write-up to accompany each visit.  (Your instructor will provide guidelines on the format for the visitation essay.)
  • Turn in paperwork within 5 academic days after the meeting.

Political Campaigns – Maximum 25 points per semester; 3 points per hour

  • Work for an issue or political party of your choice, initiative petitions or spring primaries.
  • Note that there is a maximum credit of 2 hours per day.
  • Obtain verification of your participation
  • Provide a written explanation of your activities.

Oral Research Reports – Maximum 1 per quarter; 10 points each

  • Select a topic for a speech to be given to the class regarding a current or past political topic.
  • Obtain prior approval from your instructor.(Check with your instructor for approval and submission deadlines.)
  • Submit a written outline of the speech before the report is due.

Visits to the Superior Court –  Maximum 1 per 9 weeks; 10 points per visit

  • Observe for at least one hour at each visit, with the time of arrival and departure clearly marked on your report materials.
  • Acquire a signature from a court official for verification of time in and time out.
  • Provide a write-up to accompany each visit.  (Your instructor will provide guidelines on the format for the visitation essay.)
  • Turn in paperwork within 5 academic days after the visit.
