LOHS School Safety Week

Acorn families,

As a parent of three young adults, I understand that hearing the tragic news about school violence in Parkland, FL and elsewhere has heightened our concern about the safety and well-being of our kids. As a school leader, satety is one of my most important concerns. Since coming to Live Oak this year, I have been working diliegently with MHUSD leadership, Morgan Hill Police Department, our Assistant Principals and teacher leaders to review and revise our school safety plan. Teachers have been trained and our staff is prepared to respond to a number of different emergency situations.

In addition, because we want to be sure that our students are prepared for any emergency that might happen while they are at school, we are engaging students in some important safety activites this week:

  • Emergency Procedures Review & Training in all Homerooms on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday. This review and training is focused on earthquake, evacuation, lock-down/shelter in place, and Run, Hide, Defend or active shooter protocols. The goal is to ensure that all students know what to do in the event of an emergency.
  • Run, Hide, Defend Drill on Thursday. This will provide students and staff with an important opportunity to practice potentially life-saving procedures. MHPD will be on campus to help us evaluate our response, plan for future training, and make any revisions necessary to our site emergency plan. Please discuss the importance of this drill at home so students come to school on Thursday prepared to safely and seriously participate.

Thank you in advance for helping us to improve safety procedures for your child and all students and staff at Live Oak High School. As always, we welcome your questions and feedback (reitanom@mhusd.org).

Sincerely,
Dr. Maria C. Reitano, Principal
