Additional Information:  Varsity Tutors hold a monthly $1,000 scholarship contest, where students write an essay in response to a monthly prompt.  Visitors to the Varsity Tutors webpage are able to vote via social media for submitted entries.  The top five entries with the most votes are reviewed by Varsity Tutors at the end of the month and one winner is chosen.

Criteria:  Must plan on attending one of 31 specific partner colleges (including Stanford and USC). Seniors must show outstanding academic ability (most are in the top 5 %) despite facing economic challenges and be from a household earning less than $60,000 per year (family of 4). Criteria:  10th, 11th, and 12th graders are eligible. Must be a US citizen or legal resident and committed to using education to better your life and that of your family and/or community. The College Jump Start Scholarship is an annual, merit-based competition — financial need is not considered. The main requirement is that you are committed to going to school and can express your goals for getting a higher education. Recipient chosen based on an essay of 250 words.

Horatio Alger Scholarship   Amount: 10 @ $25,000 Due Date: 10/25/16

Stokes Educational Scholarship Program – National Security Agency (NSA) Amount: Due Date: 11/15/16

Andrew Flushe Scholarship  Amount:  2 @ $500 Due Date: 11/30/16

Criteria:  The contest for this scholarship requires that students raise awarenes of the dangers of texting and driving.  Applicants must create a public awareness advertisement video (PSA) that addresses the severity of the problem.  Student must be a a citizen or lawful resident of the US in order to apply.

Additional Information:  The judge panel wants to see how creative and convincing you can be with yoru video.  Make sure it is geared towards your peers.  Videos can be technical, narrative, documentary, fiction, or any other video style you can think of.  Video selfies will not be considered. Be creative!  They’ve seen lots of stats and percentages which can get boring.  The video must be your own work.  Music videos taken on YouTube will not be considered.

Odenza Caption Scholarship  Amount:  $500 Due Date: 11/30/16

Criteria:  Submit a caption in the comment section of any post on the Odenza Facebook page prior to the November 30th deadline.  Please ensure to place #OdenzaCaption at the end of your caption/comment.  A caption consists of a title or brief explanation appended to any of the photos or illustrations on Odenza’s Facebook page.  Six weeks after the deadline, the person whose post receives the most likes will be considered the scholarship winner.

Criteria:  Seniors who demonstrate entrepreneurial spirit and initiative – a budding entrepreneur or a student who has started their own business.  Semi-finalists MUST be interviewed by an NFIB member, who will be assigned to each semi-finalist.  Also considered are:  academic records, extracurricular activities, leadership, and character.  Financial need is not a factor.

NRA SCHOLARSHIP  Amount: 4 @ $1,000 Due Date:  12/1/16

Criteria: Applicants must write an essay of about 1000 words, neat, and legible (double spaced, typed preferred).  The fund historically receives a large number of entries and the contest is highly competitive.  Include your name, age, address, telephone#, school, and grade as well as a statement from a teacher or parent certifying that the essay is your original work.  Essay contest winners will be selected and notified in early 2017.  All entries become the property of the NRA Civil Rights Defense Fund.

Criteria:  Must be a child or dependent of a CFT (California Federation of Teachers) member in good standing or a child of a deceased CFT member.  The awards are based on academic achievement, financial need, special talents and skills, participation in extra-curricular activities, community service, and a 500-word essay on a social issue about which the applicant feels strongly. Official transcript, parents’ tax return, essay, AFT/CFT Member Verification form, and 3 Rating Sheets (1 from a teacher, 1 from a counselor, and 1 from a community member) are required.

Criteria:  This is an essay contest for biographies of contemporary women mathematicians and statisticians in academic, industrial, and government careers. You must write a 500-1000 word essay that’s based primarily on an interview with a woman currently working in a mathematical career.

Criteria:  Must be 2017 graduating senior,  legal US resident with a GPA of 3.0 or above.  Student will be asked to write an essay in 800 words or less that answers the following:  When the population of a city grows, low-income people are often forced to move to more affordable areas outside of the city. Many initiatives have been proposed or implemented to keep affordable housing within city limits. Identify one such initiative and discuss its pros and cons.

ELKS NATIONAL FOUNDATION LEGACY AWARDS Amount: $1,000/year for 4 years Due Date:  2/3/17
